Retreat Recap & Some Big News!

Finally recovered from a weekend of quilting insanity with my guild! What a stinkin blast. Tucked in a cozy little mountain retreat center, snow sparkling and fireplaces glowing...we giggled, we gabbed, we stuffed our faces with popcorn & taco-flavored chips, and sewed til our eyes bled...well at least mine. Not bled, really, but I did come down with a lovely case of pink eye (hi, welcome to 4th grade).

And what a crazy I am for staying up the first night til 2:30AM, when I've been pretty much going to bed with my kids every night...yes, hard to keep my eyes open past 8pm when I'm busy growing another human! That's right! Baby # 3 is officially on the way, and we couldn't be more thrilled!

Due in October, and I'm thinking WHY IN THE WORLD didn't I take a quick minute to consider the Sewing Summit?? I know, priorities, right? Won't be able to fly, and I'm certainly not driving 8-10 hours in any direction away from home, 2 weeks before the baby's due! Aw, nuts.

Anyway, my weekend involved LOTS of cutting...all the fabric for my punky rad chevron quilt AND my first Swoon.

Cutting, cutting, cutting, meanwhile everyone around me seems to have pieced an entire quilt top.

Chrystal's V&Co houndstooth baby quilt in white & navy....so ridiculously awesome I wanted to just hijack it, and let her finish cutting 924 more squares for my Swoon.

Amanda seemed to piece her last granny square block, and have this entire top sashed before the rest of us had taken the covers off our machine. She went on to finish ANOTHER top after that. Seriously, we have a quilting machine on our hands here.

Chris' lovely French General cross quilt...came together like magic before our eyes.
SUSHI! Want some, but of course I can't have it now. This is Audrey's pattern-test version of "I Love Sushi", by the mind-bogglingly talented Sonja of Artisania. I saw this quilt on Sonja's blog last month, and am SO bummed I couldn't volunteer to be one of her pattern testers for it (WAY to much going on for me last month!), but what a treat to see Audrey's at our guild retreat. Isn't it unbelievable?? Check Sonja's blog next month to see this quilt pattern become available for purchase in March!

Beth got her quilt completely quilted, and prepped for binding. I'm totally new to the idea of serging your edge before binding! Would try it, but don't have a serger. Do you guys serge your raw quilt edge?? Is it worth the extra time?

And Angela came up with this wonky cross quilt design, I think inspired by our slashed BOM blocks from January- how cool!!!! She stitched the entire thing up in just an afternoon or so. Didn't it turn out awesome!?!

Kelly, Marta, and I were all SO pumped to finish our first Swoon blocks together!!!!

I got 2 Swoon blocks done actually...and pieces cut for a third. Yay! Can't wait to see this quilt come to life.

Gotta run!...the kiddos are quiet and you know what that means- disaster! :)

XO

Congrats!!

I've used the serger on my last 4 quilts and I love it... Keeps everything together and edges clean (no matter how much I man-handle the quilt while stitching down the binding).

Congratulations, how exciting!

Wow, this looks like so much fun! Makes me wish I had a quilt guild of my own. Granny Squares and Swoon are both on my quilting wishlist. I think yours is the first photo I've seen of a Swoon block with an actual person. I knew they were big, but wow! What a statement!

Congratulations!! That is so exciting - and I've enjoyed looking over the back posts on your blog and you have a beautiful family...I'm sure the new addition will fit right in. The retreat looks like so much fun. I've run a scrapbooking getaway but didn't know quilters did this too (I'm new)! I love to see everyone's different machines. The blocks you made are stunning. I'm enjoying the BOM - each one has been a bit challenging for me but I've got them done...not perfect...but done! I have shared them on my blog Over the Kitchen Counter (dot com) where I cook and craft. Amy...I think it will be a miracle if all these blocks I made go into a quilt. They've all 'worked' but some are a shade big (Spider Web - 3/4") and some a shade small (Chunky Chevron) so I hope they won't be for wasted effort and there's a way to make it work at the end! Thanks so much - congrats again - you are a lovely teacher and I'm really enjoying the class and 'meeting' you through your blog! a1angiem at live dot ca

Wow lots of new babies this year, I am very happy for you and your family. Swooning is in and your blocks are beautiful. I quess I didn't realize how big one block is. Is this a pattern somewhere? I love BOM I have really learned alot. So where do I find a pattern to try a swoon? The retreat looked like a wonderful time and such talent. Congratulations on the baby, girl or boy?

Tsoniki said...

Congratulations on the new baby! Those blocks are huge! I didn't realize they were that big. Is that the same pattern that is going around online, or did you modify it to be larger? Either way, beautiful!

Congratulations on #3!

Just wanted to say I'm loving your BOM - I seem to be obsessed with patchwork at the moment. I only wish I didn't have to work or sleep. I'd get so much more done.

I love those Swoon blocks - is there a pattern anywhere?

WOO! What a fun, fun weekend! (except the pink eye.)

AND CONGRATULATIONS on baby #3. So happy for you. Selfishly I'm sad that I won't see you in October, but babies are way more better, as my kids say.

Oh wow, congratulations Amy, that's wonderful news. Make sure you don't over do it young lady.....

I found your blog, having joined your BOM at Craftsy which I am just loving so much (pesky scant 1/4" seams got me on the balkan puzzle), never mind all good practice.

The retreat looks fantastic.... what wonderful work and so inspiring.

I love your blog and your work Amy - I am a new fan.
