January’s Block: Snow Blossom

January 2, 2013 25 Comments

Mmmmm, aahhhh! Don’t you just love that new year smell? So fresh and clean, full of possibilities, and full of brand new blocks to piece! I hope all you Sugar Blockers enjoyed the first block of the year, Snow Blossom.

January Sugar Block- Snow Blossom

This block just feels so happy to me, and you know I’m such a sucker for traditional blocks with star-like shapes. I thought the points in this one looked like 4 pretty tulips, framing a simple center bloom.

I love the fabrics you all are using! Some great looking blocks already and it’s only the 2nd!

January Sugar Block Collage

I want to reiterate a couple of things for those of you who are following along….

    • You should have received a welcome email when you signed up with details about the club, but if you did not, I’ve also posted the info HERE.
    • Please feel free to use any fabric you like! It doesn’t need to be solids, or a rainbow, or even the same colors I’m using. Just like the Craftsy BOM, you can make these blocks your own!!! Can you imagine hundreds of identical rainbow samplers floating around out there? Now that’s no fun. One of the great things about quilting is that it’s a fabulous way of expressing yourself and your unique personality!

;

  • You may have noticed that I did not include sashing, border, or backing requirements this time. Don’t fret! I did this for a reason. Unlike the Craftsy BOM, which was a class intended to teach you all of the basics of making a quilt, from beginning to very end, The Sugar Block Club is intended to be more of a block series- like a wine or magazine subscription- you get a new one each month. What you choose to do with the blocks is entirely up to you. You may sash them or not, you may add any borders you like, or not, you may do a fun intricate pieced back, or not, you may add in extra blocks or skip those you don’t love, or not. Ultimately, my focus here is the blocks. Hopefully we have tons of fun making them together, and sharing how our blocks and quilts (or pillows or bags or wall hangings) turn out. Also, I very well may continue the Sugar Block Club on after 2013. We’ll see what the future holds!

Oh, also, I have a few more bundles left in my Etsy shop, so snag one if you like!

;

Haaaaappy New Year to you all! I hope it’s a year full of peace, of empowerment and growth, of joy and kindness!

XO

    Loved this block and finished it yesterday. Just have to take a picture. I’m using Flock for my fabric. The points were challenging for a perfectionist. I’m happy for that. Challenge is GOOD!

    All of the blocks are beautiful. I am so anxious to complete mine. I had purchased the bundle from Amy but forgot to purchase the white for the background. I had to order it because I am disabled and cannot get to any of the local fabric stores. I am watching for the postman. LOL….

    Amy, thank you so much for getting me interested in quilting. I love it!

    Hi Amy,
    I suspect your little angels inspire your creative juices. The block is so fresh looking. I ordered your free spirit fat quarter bundle and can’t wait to receive it. The colors are so vibrant. I do have other fabrics to use but I think I will make two of each block. I really wish I lived in Denver, CO so I could participate in the live workshop. I am not sure how to register for Flicker to post photos. Everytime I tried with your link on this page about 20 tabs opened and the screen went crazy. Thanks, Jo Ann

    Thank you for making this. I cannot wait to dive into the first block. The white through me a bit but that’s okay. This is making me step out of my comfort zone and do something new.

    Looking forward to more months of oh now, I’m being forced out of my box of thinking. :D

    I have started a few (ok, more than a few) block of the months in the past 20 years and this is the first one that I have been really excited about. Your instructions are brilliant and I can’t wait for February’s block. Thank-you for taking the time to share your experience as a quilter with all of us.

    I love the pattern Amy & I am making my quilt blocks in Christmas colors/prints. So far away from your rainbow solids, but I don’t have a Christmas quilt, so here we go. I really do miss your verbal instructions and watching you sew though. Maybe another Craftsy is in your future. :-) By the way, the recipe didn’t come up for me either, when I got the January block pattern. Keep smilin’!

      Sorry Susan- they are all sold out! Check the FreeSpirit Fabrics website for a full list of colors. The bundle is in their solids area, and it’s called “Bold Spectrum.” :)

    I have tried contacting someone through several various methods, so I am hoping that this may work. I purchased the Block of the month club through paypal in November 12–I never got any information and still no coorespondence. No instructions and no answers to my emails.

      Hi Rebecca!
      Eek! I’ve emailed you over 10 times now, between the Sugar Block patterns, and responses to your emails, and each time I get a failure message saying there is an error and that email account is not currently able to receive messages. Not sure what’s up! So frustrating, and I’m sure you’re frustrated too, and thinking I’m ignoring you! Not sure what else to do, but hope you see this response. Could you perhaps email me from a different email account? I’d love to communicate with you to resolve this, but we seem to have a technical disconnect here. Hope to hear from you!
