Snowball Fight Pillow Tutorial

December 5, 2012 228 Comments

Welcome, new friends and old!  My tutorial today is part of the Deck The Halls series hosted by the every-so-lovely Ellison Lane Quilts!!!   Don’t miss a chance to win a $20 gift card from Pink Castle Fabrics- just leave a comment to this post to be entered!

And here’s my tutorial!!

Ain’t she pretty?!  It’s scary how giddy a flippin’ pillow can make me.

Here’s what you’ll need to cut:

  • 16 4.5″ squares from a variety of prints.  I used 2 squares from each of the 8 prints in my Jingle bundle.
  • 64 1.75″ squares in white
The great thing about snowball blocks is you can easily make them in any size, and without a pattern.  Perfect for charm packs & layer cakes.  To make sure your snowballs look nice and round, you just want your corner squares about a third the length of your print squares- so you might try a 3.5″ corner square with a 10″ block, etc.

Using a ruler and pencil, draw a light diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the white squares.  Then go ahead and pin 4 squares to the corners of all 16 of your print squares.  Be sure you position the marked lines across the corners and not pointing in toward the center of the block.

Now you’re going to stitch ON all of these lines, from corner to corner on each white square.

Ok, pause.  Can we just be real for a sec?  If you think I actually drew 64 little lines to make a pillow, you’re crazy.  No, I drew lines for one block to show you the “official” way to do this, and then proceeded to stitch all the rest of my blocks line-free.  C’mon, these blocks are TINY…you can do it!  Corner to corner.  Boom.

Ah, ok, I feel so much better having confessed that.  Moving on.

So there’s definitely an intentional process for chain stitching these guys…I assure you, the last thing you want to do is stitch each little seam, stop, lift the foot and clip your threads, turn the piece, stitch, clip…no no no.

By all means chain stitch these, but it’s like the never-ending chain…  Start by chain stitching one square on each block- so you have a nice little parade of squares piling up behind your machine.  When you get to the last block, grab your first one, clip it free with scissors, and proceed to then chain stitch the second seam on each block…and around and around we go.  By the end, you’ll have gone around 4 times without stopping.

Next, clip apart your chain, and trim a 1/4″ seam allowance at each corner.

PS- don’t throw your triangle scraps away!  Trust me, these are so usable!  Check out a few of my tiny triangle ideas, and stay tuned for the floating triangle block tutorial I’ll be posting later this month.

Now just press your white corners open.  Even though it was a little bit less convenient, I actually chose to press my seams toward the inside of block for a couple of reasons.  First, I didn’t want the seam allowances showing through the white.  Secondly, and this is a new little slice of info that I just learned this year and am really excited about- the pieces that your seams are pressed toward will actually subtly “stand out” more in your design, literally, because the allowance is resting under them, lifting them up higher than the opposing pieces.  And I wanted my snowballs to stand out- not the white diamonds.  Seems like it wouldn’t matter, and you know, it doesn’t really, but why not make an intentional informed choice either way?

Keep in mind that at this point, your snowballs will probably look a bit more “diamondy” than you’d envisioned.  That’s ok.  Once you stitch them all together to create your pillow or quilt, the seam allowances will fix this, and add to the round-ish snowball shape that makes these blocks so cute.

See?  So easy.  Now go make a cute snowball pillow or quilt before Christmas bites you in the butt, steals your wallet, and runs away!

Like the fabrics I used??  It’s my new bundle for sale over at Sew Lux Fabrics -“Jingle.”  The bundle will be available through December and you can snag one here.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to this post to enter the giveaway for $20 to Pink Castle Fabrics!!!  Contest will close 12/7 at midnight PST, and will be announced right here, along with the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day winner on 12/8.

UPDATE:  This giveaway is now CLOSED

Good luck and thanks for stopping by!  Pop back over to Ellison Lane Quilts tomorrow, 12/7, for the last tutorial and give away in the Deck the Halls series!!

Wow, this is truly beautiful, what a great project. I love your new sewing machine too – so cute. I wonder how it compares to your super one that you use normally? I have a Brother that I bought for just over £100 about 7 years ago and keep droolling at all the other machines but then think do I really need one when the one I have does just great…. although you can’t lower the feed dogs.

Karen, in the Craftsy class that Leah Day is giving, she notes that lowering the feed dogs is not necessary and maybe not even the best practice when free motion quilting. She suggests setting your stitch length to 0 instead. You get the same effect but better. I’ve tried it and yes, she is right. The stitching is smoother and cleaner. She has a ton of other great insights too, so if you haven’t thought about signing up for her class, I highly recommend it.

        Hi Chriss

That sounds like a jolly good idea. I will go and have a look. I am currently zig zag stitching around some leaves on a Lynette Anderson block which is slow going as because of the shape and the battle with the feed dogs !

        Thanks again K

Amy, This looks like such a fun pillow to make. I have my holiday fabrics pulled out and just waiting for attention. BTW, I see you are using your new-to-you Featherweight to make the pillow. I have to tell you that your blog about your machine inspired me to make a purchase of my own a few days ago. I am now the proud owner of “The greatest sewing machine ever made”, a Singer 401A Slant-O-Matic. This is a 1951 beauty with a gorgeous 6 drawer cabinet. I have nicknamed her Lillian, after my mother who instilled in me a love for all things fabric. (I’d post a picture, but it is not possible here.) Thanks for all of your inspiration too!

Such a pretty design! Thanks for sharing.
Have you ever made a second line of stitching on the corner block BEFORE cutting it off? You then cut between the lines of stitching and end up with a teeny square made from the two triangles.

This is super cute! I love that you are making great use of your new machine. I got a 1921-1923 treadle model that I can not wait to get to play on. I sent her off for some tlc at what I am calling the sewing machine spa lol. I can’t wait to try it out. It makes me feel very nostalgic!

Great tutorial. Thank you for sharing it. This is definitely on my to do list. I love my 1936 Featherweight, born in Elizabeth, NJ. Did you know you can date them by serial number and find out where they were manufactured? I love to piece on mine. In fact I did most of my Craftsy BOM on it. It is such a great machine.

Thanks for sharing this design and giving such thorough instructions, including your confession of not marking every square and the tip about chain piecing. I have just finished my 3rd puff quilt for my children (1 to go ) and was trying to remember where the instructions were for the the christmas rag quilt that was next in line, saw another gorgeous pattern I wanted to make up – and now this. It might just get snuck in. I do have some christmas prints that would look gorgeous in it. Now where are they ? Aaaargh ! Thanx so much. You make life fun.

I am a big fan of the simplicity of Snowballs. It is one of those blocks that is so easy yet the extreme attention to detail for the perfect 1/4 seam is a must. The only quilt I have finished from top to binding was a solid snowball I made for my 7 year old son. I finished it when he was really sick with Scarlet fever and it really comforted him.

I just finished making a short table runner out of 3 rows of 5″ squares and made the mat using the lil twister thingy. very cool, I outlined the middle for the quilting. and used the scrap on the edge cut it off and made binding I bordered it in white sash first. I think I might make some place mats too. I tried 4″ squares, did not get good results but I have about 1200 squares.sigh…

But honestly, I just counted up how many quilting projects I have going right now and it stands at 9 (including the Sugar Block starting in a few weeks). I have set a goal to get them all done within the next year. I have signed up for the Free Motion Quilting class on craftsy with Leah Day and hope that this will help me knock out the ones that just need to be quilted. But this little nugget of wonderful may have to wait until next year…unless I make it a winter snowball and not just Christmas…Oh there I go again.

Now I’ll just have to find time in the new year to get my quilting/sewing to do list done as well as begin making gifts for Christmas next year. Never to late to get started so I’m not rushing at the end of the year. As always, your tutorials are easy to understand and are fantastic. It would be exciting to win as well.

I’ve noticed you’re using your vintage sewing machine! I guess it worked fine. I just want to say that I love your blog and I have watched BOM at Craftsy. So inspiring and then I saw this cute pillow and had to run out and get some materials. I can’t wait to start doing projects from your tutorial!

I went to see about ordering a bundle of your Christmas fabric and now on the 17th of December it is not available. Luckily for you it has sold out. Unluckily for us the customers, it is not available through December. Congrats on it’s selling out! Boo hoo for us. It is beautiful.

Just a question Amy, you mention “stay tuned for the floating triangle block tutorial I’ll be posting later this month”…a) Could you help me understand a “floating triangle” is that just when a triangle is isolated in space by a contract around it?
    and b)
did that floating triangle block tutorial happen, i can’t find it :)
    Cheers.

Hi Virginia! I used a 16″ X 16″ pillow form for mine, but this pattern could easily be adapted to fit any size pillow, simply by using more or less snowball blocks. Have fun, and thanks for stopping by! -Amy
