Yup, I’m spending time with future craft stars this summer!
You’re not gonna find a more enthusiastic, creative group of crafters than these 8-11yo girls I got the chance to work with this week, over at Summer Craft Camp at my favorite local fabric & yarn store. All week they’d been hand sewing softies, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, and needlefelting up a storm….but the response was absolutely priceless when the camp leader introduced me and told them that I’d be helping them with a quilting project that day…they SQUEALED with joy!!!
Talk about a modern approach- we pretty much took all the rules, wrapped them in a neat little package, and kicked them to the curb. And it couldn’t have been better! They each chose a square of felt with Wonder Under stuck to it, then armed with scissors, went to town on a mountain of delicious scraps, creating unique raw edge “applique” collages that they then got to crazy quilt on the machine using any fun stitches they wanted (no dial was left unturned)….
I encouraged them to turn their finished collages into whatever final piece they desired, and by the end of the afternoon, we had the most colorful, whimsical aray of snack mats, pillows, bags, and ornaments, not to mention a dozen girls who had learned how much FUN fabric art can be, using outside-the-box quilting techniques.
Seriously, I remember camps and classes like these that literally changed the course of my life as an eager kiddo, bursting with creativity and looking for ways to express myself. I feel SO HONORED to be a part of that journey for these kids! SO fulfilling and invaluable for everyone involved, truly.
I’d love to hear what things you’ve be involved in, helping shape a future generation of crafters…and if you haven’t entered this realm yet, I encourage you to get involved!!! Think about volunteering to lead a group of young 4-Hers, spend an afternoon at a local summer camp, school, or craft shop teaching a beginner sewing project, or how about even getting your guild involved by hosting an event specifically for the young ones?
It’s up to US to empower a future generation of crazy, crafty, fabric-obsessed, quilt addicts!
