Is it just me, or can sewing curves be completely intimidating? I’ll never forget my first attempt…holding the cut fabric pieces in my hands and saying, “These fit together exactly how?!? And it’s supposed to lay flat?!?” Ah! It can really be so intimidating that many quilters don’t even attempt it, and skip over designs that contain curves for more straightforward options (ha!). That was definitely me at one point in time!
Thank goodness for wonderful teachers like my dear friend Angela Pingel, who aren’t afraid take curves by the horns and share with us some invaluable instruction and guidance to really help us tackle our fears of incorporating curves into our quilts. Angela blogs over at Cut to Pieces, and is the author of the new book, A Quilter’s Mixology. I’m posting today in celebration of her brand new book companion DVD that has just been released – Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing.
First off, if you don’t have this book yet, you need it! These quilts are absolutely gorgeous, and so innovative! Honestly, you’re bucket list will be filled up before you even get half way through it. Love this book.
This DVD is an absolute WEALTH of not only information, but also step by step demonstrations where Angela takes us through all of the gorgeous designs from her book. Drunkards path, apple cores, clamshells, rain drops and paint drips, flowers, butterflies, leaves…such fresh, modern interpretations of classic curved patchwork.
For me, curves are just like foundation paper piecing in that it’s just so incredibly helpful to be able to actually SEE someone demonstrate it. Photos or illustrations can never provide as much as a great video demonstration can, when it comes to techniques like this…to see the way she handles the curve and where and how she pins, stitches, and presses….absolutely enlightening.
If curves are on your bucket list (or you’ve removed them from your bucket list because you don’t even want to go there!), I definitely recommend picking up this fantastic video, via either DVD or instant digital download. What a fun and simple opportunity to finally tackle those curves!
And now how about a GIVEAWAY??? Use the Rafflecopter box below to enter, and on Friday 2/6 I’ll choose 1 lucky winner to receive a copy of Angela’s dvd (USA only- so sorry international readers! Love you!).

This would definitely go a long way to helping me tackle that drunkards path quilt I have the fabrics for, but too timid to attempt.
I would love to have this DVD. I just got back into sewing and started my first quilt, a lonestar center all those angles yikes. I probably should have started with something simpler, but I always seem to try the harder things first, because the pattern is something I like. Hope I win, love your blog.
Sounds like a lot could be learned from this DVD! I’ve been contemplating trying out some curves recently. This could definitely help!
I think improv is what intimidates me most, I like order and improv isn’t that. I’m taking a class this year on it and hope it pushes me into something exciting! And Y-seams ~ so intimidated that I haven’t even tried them yet. I’ve done one thing with curves and was sort of successful. It was a mini that a LFS asked me to make to hang in the shop. It turned out nice but still think I could use some help!
Thanks for the giveaway ~ so generous!
This resource would help me tackle curves. They are something I am reluctant to do. Although I have done a few wasn’t real happy with the results.
I’m completely intimidated by sewing curves and keep a lot of respect for zippers too. I’m sure this DVD will help me. Love your blog THANKS
I absolutely LOVE the look of the curved blocks but must admit that I am terrified at the thought of attempting to make a quilt using them. I have been sticking to save and easy patterns as I have been quilting less than 2 years. The most challenging block I have done so far is the Lemoyne Star (not with HST). It was tricky at first, but I found a wonderful tutorial that helped me through. I’m sure the DVD will help me tackle my fear…..and maybe attempt a curved block!
Thanks!
This looks awesome and would be awesome to win. Thanks for the chance to win.
This is just what I need! Thanks for the chance to win!
I admit it: curved piecing does scare me. It would be great to have Angela’s video to demystify some of the process.
Improv is hard for me. This sounds like an excellent resource. I’m librarian for our local (Boulder) Modern Guild and would love to add it to our library. Thanks for the chance.
I always turn away from anything with curves! Maybe this could help – thanks so much for the chance to win :)
I am working on curves now some come out ok others not so much.I’m not really afraid of trying anything. I just may not do it again.
I am new to quilting and so excited about the possibilities! But not going to lie curves and paper piecing are scary! Teach me!
I love these curved ideas which reminds me of a Cathedral Window quilt started and stopped–rechecked your tutorial on the Cathedral Window playmat ans I’m reinspired. Also, what’s the name of your book and when is it coming out? I can’t wait to purchase one.
I’ve recently moved and had to change my email. I am not sure how to do that to continue receiving your blog.
I have always wanted to do a drunkards path quilt, but it is so intimidating. This would help give me courage.
