A Big Girl Room for Little Miss Modd

June 2, 2011 Leave a Comment

Ever work on a project that just fell into place so smoothly it almost felt unfair? That’s what this week’s redo of my 3 yo sweetie pie’s room was like. I mean, not to brag, but this one was just plain fun. Picked the colors in 5 minutes at Home Depot and they literally make my soul sing every time I walk in to tuck her little bottom in bed. Thrift stores and garage sales were dropping charming little gems on me like manna from heaven.

Here’s my inspiration space- Chelsea Anderson’s booth at Fall 2010 Houston Quilt Market. Kinda fresh whimsical girlie mod Scandinavian? Ran across this Henry Glass Miss Modd fabric collection at a local fabric exchange shop for $5/yd. Um, yes please!

Still working on the quilt and some scrappy chenille pillows, but here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

Found the brown vintage mirror at a garage sale for $5. Yes, I said $5. The others were $.50 or less. Gave them all the frames a fresh coats of paint and used a couple to frame some yummy fabric scraps.

Mod wall flowers using a starch idea I’d been dying to try out after seeing what this mom did with clouds!! The possibilities are endless. Found the starch recipe here, but I cut it in half- just 2 Tbs of cornstarch mix with 1/2 c. cold water, then add 2 c. boiling water. Stir, and let it cool. Liberally brush onto to your fabric pieces until they’re soaked (I used large bowls and lampshades to cut nice big circles out first). Then just stick to the wall, smoothing out any air bubbles, and let dry. If it were any easier, they’d put themselves up. They’re nice and stuck, but peel off easily with virtually no damage if you change your mind.

My first attempt at fabric wall art! Repurposed a canvas I had lying around and fussy cut some of my favorite large prints. A little rick-rack, some fabric glue, and voila!

More thifty treasures on display. The baby shoes were my Dad’s. And the rubix cube? Eh, why not. Doesn’t every room need one?

MORE thifted yard sale finds!! Mirror- $3 at Goodwill. Dresser- $10 at yardsale. Afghan, doilies, lamp & teapot- yard sales for virtually nothing.

Isn’t just about everything hung from twine with clothes pins adorable? I tend to think yes.

Kinda random but fun apple green tissue pom poms for $.25. I guess they were originally used for someone’s church baby shower, but I love them in this room.

Can’t wait to post the quilt & pillows! Now to figure how to get my girls to nap for HOURS this week so I can work on them…
