A New Quilt Workshop: Triple Barnstar

September 10, 2014 21 Comments

Whew!  What a month!  We’ve been buuuusy around here, still getting back into the swing of school, and also enjoying a special week with Grandma & Grandpa.  More on all that fun later this week- today I wanted to share a few pics of my new Triple Barnstar Quilt Workshop, which is happening this month over on Craftsy.  I posted a couple of pics on Instagram, but wanted to hop on here as well to share more.  I just love this happy quilt!

These Craftsy workshops are really fun because they’re quilt-alongs that include all of the fabric for the quilt top.  And just like a Craftsy class, you can ask questions, chat and post pictures in the forums, but instead of video, there are oodles of step by step photos and instructions.  It’s kinda like, social event + fabric shopping + make a quilt = love it.

I had planned to use this quilt in my living room, but somehow it made it’s way onto my bed.  Something about a big pretty star quilt on a bed….ah!  It’s 72″ X 72″, so not a proper queen size, but I can’t bear to move it!

The fabrics we’re using in the September workshop are Joel Dewberry’s new line, Birch Farm.  I just love it!  Yummy teal, chartreuse, brown, and mossy green.  I have some yardage leftover so I think I’m going to make some pretty pillowcases to match, at some point (famous last words).

So the design for this quilt was actually from the last road trip we took to visit family on the East Coast for Christmas.  Along the way we saw dozens of gorgeous barnstars – lovely traditional star quilt blocks painted on the sides of barns.  We’d be speedin’ on down the road, and whiz right passed one and I’d say, “Babe!  Turn around!  I have to get a picture of that barnstar!”  Ha!  :)  It was a fun trip, and I did get to snap pics of a couple of them.  Here’s the one that inspired this quilt specifically.

And what’s a quilt without some snuggling?  This is my absolute favorite way to photograph quilts…just wrap my kids up in them and say, enjoy!  I think Nora took this one particularly seriously….”Quilt Queen”.

So that’s that!  If you’re interested in signing up, you can do that HERE.  It’s not too late- the fabric is rushed to you, so you can jump right in and get to stitching right away.

I hope your September is off to a good start as well!  Thanks for stopping by!  More on our fun school adventures later this week…

XO

Hi Amy and Family, It is so lovely to see how your beautiful family are growing and gee hasn’t time passed. My year has had some unexpected interruptions which have persisted and has directed almost every thought during my waking moments. But determined not to turn this into a sad and sorry email I am endeavouring to stay positive! That must be a first for me, I have done some sewing and are awaiting to see what my last BOM blocks will look like when they turn up next month. So I’ve got to catch up with this months block first it definately won’t take long to make. I’m not totally sure about it but will make it because eventually it will work in my quilt and that’s what the quilt designer wanted. But I wanted to let you know Amy that I will join your next group as I love your current quilt on your bed. I will be making it in White and blue now I know that is my usual colour that I work in but my backgroun will be all white and only blue fabrics will be used. Can’t wait to see how it will look. Also Amy I think home education is brilliant and certainly has less peer pressure. I believe there is greater opportunities to improve and enhance education and learning by haing more fun while your doing it. Well I love reading your blogs keep them coming.

Almost done with the top and I am gonna quilt on the big machine! Practice practice practice!!!
I think it. Is really amusing that it all the same fabrics as yours but it looks different? I didn’t want to “copy” yours so I just grabbed the fabrics as I came to them and used them for each section as they were done. I am really pleased. I have a friend who loves owls so I will be giving the quilt to her! Beautiful job on the class keep them coming Amy. You’ve got a fan in me!!!!

I’m doing the workshop and as soon as I saw the picture of this quilt on your bed, I started redoing my bedroom!! Bought upholstery fabric to recover chairs, planned new curtains. Now to finish the quilt…

Oh, I’d love to take the class, but without the fabric ~ I’d want to use my own. I absolutely love this quilt!

I would also lie to be able to just do the class, as I have a good sized stash now that I started the sugar block club this year. ( I went a little overboard buying fabric…oops)

It is just absolutely gorgeous! I am totally enthralled with the pattern, and the fabric selection!
I’d give anything to do this class, but there is no possible way my schedule will permit it…hopefully, the pattern will be available at a future point in time, because I would love to make this quilt for my own bed!

I’m so excited to start making mine! I signed up for the class awhile ago and have all my fabric sitting in a beautiful stack. I have apples, peaches and corn to can before I can start any sewing right now. :(

I entered the class and on 1 Sept started cutting. So now, two+ weeks later, I have a massive pile of cut fabric and not a stitch sewn. Ugh. I’m so glad you posted this because it’s a good motivator to return to it. Lately (well no, all the time really) I seem to be a little ADD when it comes to quilting. I’ll start a project and SQUIRLL! I’m off to another one. And then I loop back around to a smaller one that I started awhile back that’s easier to finish just so I can say I did something but don’t finish it. Here comes Christmas and I’m no closer to finishing a thing I started this year. To make matters worse, I lost my dad in early August, my mind went somewhere with grief in the lead, and now I’m totally off whatever game I had. Oh, and…last July, I accepted a commission to make a king size Crown Royal quilt for a friend. (smacks forehead) Geez…what was I thinking? At least I told him it would take a year. I’m making 64 of the barnstar blocks out of the purple bags and a rich gold batik – 32 are complete and thank the Lord above for the Flying Geese ruler. I chose Robert Hoffman’s Vegas Purple for the backing and I’m off this weekend ISO a manly purple for the sashing. I’m as scatterbrained as this reply is rambling. Good grief. I think I need therapy. Where’s my sewing machine…

Becky – hope your feeling ok – take it easy on yourself – it’s hard when you lose a beautiful parent and sometimes you just need to breathe. I too have my fabric cut, and have been interrupted by a horrible case of shingles on my face, but am now starting to see the light again and get back to it all. I’ve completed six quilts this year. What I ended up doing was writing a list of every quilt I had on the go, then breakng it out by block, and as I did a block, I then crossed it off my list. I had a ball doing it this way, and breaking it down to sections, ie – cutting, piecing, sashing, sandwiching, quilting and binding, I got them done and felt accomplishment on the way. And I had the pleasure of seeing peoples faces as I have them their quilts, and got two finished for home. This beautiful barnstar quilt is going to be for me.
Amy – love your quilt, your BOM on Craftsy and the craftsy workshop. Your blog is great, and I will continue to support you. That petal pattern will be next on my list! Thank you for the fun and inspiration you give us in the quilting community from all over the world.

Are you selling pattern for this quilt? If so, where? I’ve looked on craftsy, but been unable to find anything for this.
