Block Crazy Giveaway!

January 26, 2016 533 Comments

Can you believe January is almost over??  We’ll be diving into another fun Sugar Block in just a few days!  I thought I’d celebrate wrapping up our first month of 2016 SBC fun with a GIVEAWAY!  Not one, but two fabulous goodies up for grabs this week!

Giveaway Prize #1:

How about some gorgeous fabric??  I am just giddy about my Blogger’s Choice bundle up on Fat Quarter Shop this month…some of my favorite reds, blues, and greens from some of my favorite designers…Denyse Schmidt, Anna Maria Horner, Sweetwater, and more.  Isn’t it just happy?  I can’t wait to get mine and start cutting in to it.  Fat Quarter Shop is generously offering one of these 12 pc bundles to one lucky reader here on my blog!

Fat Quarter Shop Giveaway

Giveaway Prize #2:

If you’re crazy about blocks, you’re doing to have a ball with my friend AnneMarie Chany’s beautiful new book, Sister Sampler Quilts (Fons & Porter/F+W; $19.99  http://www.sistersamplerquilts.com)

IMG_6749

This book is based on a really fun idea that I think I just might get in the habit of myself- making 2 of each sampler block at a time.  In the book, these blocks are “sisters” and go in the same sampler quilt for added cohesion, but made in different fabrics.  I’m SO wish you on this AnneMarie- if you’re going to make a sampler block…figure out the instructions, cut out all the pieces, and put it together…why not just make two?!  This way you get to see what the block looks like in 2 fabric options, and you can either make a bigger quilt, or make two quilts!  The blocks in this Vice Versa sampler play with placing prints/background fabric in opposite spots.  LOVE this idea!  Same block- two completely different looks (and yet they match well).

IMG_6754

I love this Box & Star Frame block!  It’s been way too long since I’ve made a string style quilt and these blocks are making me feel like I want to make one!

IMG_6763

This pair of blocks made me thing of the units that I’m always making in pairs- half square triangles for one, and quarter square triangles as yet.  Two-at-a-time units would make the two-at-once blocks even quicker. (by the way, how cute is the polka dot backing and binding on that quilt!!!)

IMG_6767
SO- two fabulous prizes to be won this week, my dear Sugar Blockers!!!

I love quilting because I do it with my friends every fortnight. We started with your Craftsy BOM 2012 and have been quilting ever since. They are all teachers and I had to retire early because of poorliness, so every time we meet I teach them a new block. To have a small chance to teach again is so lovely and we have so much fun – and supper!!!!

The thing I love most about making a block is how close it makes me feel to my grandmother. Every time, I am simply overwhelmed with memories of spending time at her knee while she worked on her quilts in varying stages. Though she is no longer with us, creating, sewing and finishing a quilt block brings her right back to me for that briefest of moments.

My life is pretty stressful as I work long hours in our business. What I love about making blocks is that the challenge is there but it’s not too overwhelming. I can switch off from everything else and enjoy the process, a challenge to test me but not such a huge project that it won’t fit into my leisure time. I like the whole process of picking out the colours, working out what I have to do, having you as inspiration and then seeing the end result. Quilting is so good for body and soul and I just love seeing the achievements of everyone and how they have interpreted the block. It’s my little treat and one I love dearly.

Once one is made, creating a second in a new color way saves time.👍 I get a new block and I get my quilt done more quickly so I can begin a new one. Yeah! Thank you for “Sugar Block”.

The things I love most about making quilt blocks are first, picking out my fabric (placing different fabrics together on my cutting table before I ever start cutting into them); and second, actually making the blocks. Sometimes they come together perfectly, and sometimes I have to unsew, but that doesn’t bother me. The process of learning new techniques and how to piece the blocks together is so calming and relaxing. I love it all!!! Thanks for the give aways!!!

But, I also love the simplicity of being able to take it along, stitch in the car or on the train,or if the situation changes, I can stop and easily continue at a later time.

I also enjoy the delight on the faces of the one I’ve made it for when they get their first look at it….ah what joy fills my heart! Once I made a picture quilt for my friend and her daughter who had recently lost her baby to SIDS. We both cried when she opened it and since we live in different states, it’s like I gave her a BIG hug across the miles. Quilting to me is like miles and miles of smiles 😊😊😊😊😊😊

I love to play around with colors, textures, and shapes. This is new for me because I’ve just recently gotten the “I can do it myself” bug. It’s such fun to put things together, rearrange them, and finally come up with something I kind of like. I’ve got a loooooong way to go and am really excited about trying to create my own things.

I love laying out all the finished quilt blocks and working out what order to put them in, whether to add sashing or a boarder. You know you’re only a hop, skip and a jump away from having that quilt top from having that quilt top all sewn up.

there are so many things about the quilting process I enjoy, but after my daughter and granddaughter moved in with us it has become a ritual every morning for my 8 year old granddaughter to join me in my sewing room. Sometimes she’ll sit at a machine and work on a “quilt” for her doll, sometimes help me choose fabric for a new project and if I’m FMQ she enjoys watching. She even has her own sketch pad for “doodling” quilt pattern ideas!

Making quilt blocks takes me back to my roots. My grandmother and great grandmother (born in 1868) were quilters. I love how the blocks change just by changing the fabrics, an entire quilt can be one pattern and look so different only because the pieces are different fabrics. Also that one block alone looks nice, but when several are put together as a quilt, other patterns emerge and the look is entirely different and awesome!

I like the fact that if you are busy, a single block is not an overwhelming task.
