Weeeeell, hello friends!!! How are you?? I missed you last week! Yes, I’m behind a week! Not to worry- everything’s ok and Block 13’s post will be up on Wednesday, so we’ll be ready to get back on track with #14 on Monday (commence everyone with OCD, including myself, going nuts!) I know! A little funky this week. Why the skip? Well, I think I’m gonna have to come clean…let’s just say we’re REALLY cooking up something behind the scenes in this house and I’m not just talking about quilt blocks.
That’s right! We’ve got a bun in the oven- our fifth bun to be exact! We are THRILLED and so excited to meet this new little angel in October! Who will it be??? Boy? Girl? Either way, it’s a tie breaker! We can’t wait to find out.
Admittedly, these first 12 weeks have been rough. Sleepy, sleepy, sleepy, and a legit case of what we affectionately call my “evening sickness” – every evening, starting at about 3 or 4pm and continuing through bedtime, it’s basically like I have the flu- full body aches, major nausea and fatigue. In a word…nonfunctional. But we’re making it work! I finally learned to reverse my meals- I eat a big “dinner” in the morning when I’m ravenous, a moderate lunch, and then little to nothing in the evening. Come sundown and I’m quarantined in my bed (away from the dinner smells!), surrounded by zillions of pillows, a fan, and ice water. I’m pretty much a big baby, tucked in and put to bed before the kids even start their bedtime routine- ah!
Needless to say, I CAN’T WAIT til I’m out of this stage…hopefully within the next couple of weeks, fingers crossed. Then hopefully back to some version of normalcy (I’ll take what I can get!).
Anyway, that’s the low down on what’s up over here! Did you stitch up block 12 last week anyway?? If not, no worries- it’s a really easy one!
(Ok, seriously, how funny is the timing on this block title? My husband and I had a good laugh when we realized the irony).
I really love this baby quilt that Amy Friend made, using the Plus One block and a darling owl in the center. So creative! See what you can come up with just a single block? So many possibilities, and sometimes the simplest ones are the prettiest.
I love how she continued the leaf shape in the unpieced corner blocks to. It really is the perfect touch in the overall design. You can find the pattern for Amy’s owl motif in her book, Intentional Piecing.
I jumped on EQ7 and really like what evolved through some play with this block….a really striking geometric quilt with just the one block and some simple sashing and cornerstones.
The sashing and cornerstones are cut at a width of 1.5” (so 1” finished), and the wider outer border is cut at 2.5” wide (2” finished). It’s nothing complicated but that’s what I love about it. I think it brings out the beauty of the block with a simple repeat, some nice spacing to let the shapes “breathe” a bit, and then, of course, some strong color contrast to make everything pop.
Yay! Have fun with the Plus One block! Oh BTW- if you’ve not done raw edge applique before (that’s the technique used to attach the petal shapes), check out this video for a helpful demo. It’s a different block with more petals, but the steps are the same.
One more thing, in case you’ve been waiting to snag a signed copy of the book and missed the first printing, you’re in luck! Reprints are finally in and available in my shop HERE (they’re updated, so no errors- HALLELUJAH!). Those of you who pre-ordered, your book is on the way! I’ve finally got them all shipped so be on the lookout!
Until Wednesday, friends…
XO
Amy

Yay! I love this block, especially the block on repeat! I hope to start a sweet baby quilt with this block. We are expecting our 6th in the middle of September. In the last week, I have started to feel more human in the evenings. I hadn’t thought to switch our meals. God bless you and your family. It appears that your wee one is already loved by your bigs.
Congratulations!! I hope you are feeling better soon.
Congratulations!!! Hope you are feeling better very soon. Morning or evening – only slightly better than morning, noon & night sickness.
Best wishes to all your family. Plus One.
Congratulations! So very happy for you and your family! I don’t know how you get everything in! Your health is most important!
How wonderful! Wishing you the enjoyment of evening meals soon :)

Congratulations! I’m so sorry this pregnancy is coming with some nasty symptoms. I hope it is alleviated soon. Plus one–that is funny!
Wow, I love the block! Such a great secondary pattern. And Wow… great baby news! Congratulations. I swore by ginger tablets when I was pregnant with my second. Two tablets every 8 hours, on the dot… and I just made it through with a 15mth old toddler. Fun times… Not.
I just discovered this on Pinterest. Looks like a fun blog and contains some interesting patterns. I already have 2 in my cart. Can’t wait to follow Amy and her ideas!
Yay Baby! My body went kaput after #4 so no more for me :( at least biologically, we are looking at adoption someday :) Congratulations!
Curious about that owl – I thought it was applique, but now I am wondering if it’s pieced?
Congratulations on ‘A Gift from Heaven’ #5! I have 5 also and they are truly each a gift from heaven. Prayers that all goes well and you feel better soon.
Hi Amy, not replying to this particular dated/post, just wanting to say hello. I have been thinking of you and wondering how you are doing? I am almost twice your age, not pregnant, but sure know about the ups and downs of stress and anxiety, etc. Many hugs when you need ’em and sometimes a good nudge, which I need quite often. I am in Newport News VA but did live near Charlottesville for about 10 yrs. warmest of thoughts to you and yours.
Amy,
in The Quilt Block Cookbook, there is a picture of a prayer book on the Halo block page. Can you tell me the name of that book?
I love your quilt book. So much inspiration!
